SHOULDICE ALSTAR: Sauble results

Robbie Thompson wins the Shouldice ALSTAR Series race at Sauble Speedway

SAUBLE BEACH, ON – Robbie Thompson extended his Shouldice Designer Stone ALSTAR Late Model Series points lead on Saturday night at Sauble Speedway when he picked up his third feature win of the season. The reigning series champion lined up 20th in the field of 24 starters for the season’s ninth race and used every lap of the Quaker State 75 to work his way to the front.

The SMP / Logel’s Dodge driver executed a dramatic last lap pass on race leader Dan Delisle en route to the win in front of a capacity crowd at Sauble. Thompson edged ahead of Delisle, who drives the KFC / Charter House Chevy, as the two charged toward the checkered flag.

In victory lane, Thompson’s thoughts were with his father, John Thompson, who was at home after being injured in a traffic accident earlier in the week. “I really wanted that win tonight for my dad,” said the Southampton, ON racer, after the victory. “My thoughts are with him at home.”

Delisle, who hails from LaSalle, ON, had taken the lead from Jim Molenhuis on lap 41, after starting 19th, and did everything he could to capture his first ALSTAR victory, but came up just short.

“We got into it with the #7 car [Derrick Tiemersma] earlier, but it still was real good [at the end]. We worked hard to get out front. I don’t know how Robbie [Thompson] pulled that move off but it was a good night. It would have been great to win. Thanks to McColl racing and AP Racing Engines.”

The final podium position at Sauble went to Derrick Tiemersma of Newmarket, ON. Tiemersma came from 18th on the starting grid and maintained his runner-up position in the points as he chases Thompson with three races to go in the 2005 ALSTAR schedule.

“At the beginning of the race we had the flat and after that we had our work cut out for us,” said the Wayfreight Chevrolet driver. “But we found some holes and you gotta enjoy that.”

Richard Holmes started on the pole for the 75 lap chase, but Jim Molenhuis bolted to the lead immediately from the outside of the front row as the pair took the initial green flag. From there, Molenhuis led the first 40 laps before giving way to Delisle, who was fastest during time trials for the Quaker State 75. The race was a positive contrast to Molenhuis’ first ALSTAR outing of 2005, when his car flipped over at Sauble in the early laps of the race on the May long weekend. The Churchill, ON racer went on to finish eighth in the final results.
Chatham, ON racer Kirk Hooker and Jason Shaw (Guelph, ON) rounded out the top five finishers at Sauble Speedway on Saturday night. In earlier heat race action, checkered flags went to: Jeff Cassidy, Dan Delisle, Jason Shaw, Robbie Thompson and Craig Zurbrigg.

The next Shouldice Designer Stone ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Saturday, August 13 at Peterborough Speedway.
