Vancouver B.C., July 18, 2005: Twenty-five year old Vancouver-born racer Darryl O’Young gave his Hong Kong based Team Jebsen much to cheer about at this past weekend’s double-header round of the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia in Beijing. Fresh from his previous week’s experience in Monza, Italy where he competed in a round of the European Le Mans Championship (also in a Porsche), O’Young dominated both races 6 and 7 of the prestigious Asian racing series. He didn’t put a foot wrong in either race, despite coming under pressure from a number of hard-charging and extremely formidable competitors including, among others, the likes of reigning British GT Champion, Jonathan Cocker and Formula 3 star Danny Watts.
Both races were tremendously exciting with Briton Danny Watts finishing third in Round 7 after what he described as “one of the most enjoyable” races of his career. During that race, Watts managed to stay ahead of reigning series Champion, A-Ha Racing’s Matthew Marsh and 2005 series leader Charoensukhawatana Nattavude although he was unable to overhaul GruppeM Racing’s Jonathan Cocker.
Said O’Young after his second win of the weekend: “When you get on the grid, you just never know what is going to happen, but I think I did a good job… I just needed to be consistent at the front. I did have a couple of ‘moments’, but managed to get away with it.”
After racing Karts and Formula cars in North America since he was eight years old, adapting to racing in Asia has been an interesting challenge for O’Young, but from all indications, (especially after back-to-back wins in Beijing), he seems to be very much up to the task.
With four rounds to go, Nattavude leads the 2005 Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia on 120 points with O’Young taking second position on the leaderboard, 14 points behind. Following his performance this past weekend however, Darryl O’Young has most definitely shown everyone that the title is still very much up for grabs. Said O’Young of his title aspirations: “Winning the Championship was always our aim since the start of the season. We had a couple of setbacks earlier on, so it’s great to have two wins here. I’m looking forward to the next two rounds in Korea.
Rounds 8 and 9 of the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia will be held at South Korea’s Taebaek Circuit on August 6 and 7 followed by appearances at the Formula One race in Shanghai Oct. 15/16 and at the Macau Grand Prix Nov. 19/20.
