Ron VanEs has ventured west to compete in a stock car race only once before this season but Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park is quickly becoming his favourite destination.
Last year the Smithville, Ontario driver fought his way to a 16th place finish in the 300-lap main event after placing fifth in the weekend event’s pre-race 100-lap qualifier.
This past weekend he surprised a lot of people by motoring to an impressive ninth place finish in Saturday’s feature after starting 15th in the 29-car field.
In his 100-lap Friday qualifier Ron was also in fine running form finishing a strong eighth in the event won by local Alberta favourite, Kevin Dowler of Sherwood Park.
It was VanEs’ best overall performance since entering Canada’s leading stock car racing season last year.
Ron maintained a steady pace, stayed out of trouble and made timely pit stops during Saturday’s 300-lap event slowed by 5 caution flags for a total of 50 laps
Although the official results have yet to be confirmed by CASCAR officials, it appears the trip and resulting points gained from this past weekend’s success have boosted the young driver of the Star Van Systems/ All Cover Portable Systems Monte Carlo up to seventeenth place in the Super Series standings as he and the team head to Vernon, BC’s Sun Valley Speedway and race number 7 in the 12-race national schedule.
DJ Kennington of St. Thomas captured his first Super Series race since August 9, 2003 in St. Eustache to win the MOPAR 300 event beating Peter Gibbons of Stouffville and Dave Jacombs of Mt. Hope Ontario to the checkered flag. Sophomore sensation JR Fitzpatrick of Cambridge outran Kevin Dowler to finish fourth.
