SHOULDICE ALSTAR: Kawartha Summary & Results

Shaw takes second ALSTAR win of ‘05 in the series’ first-ever visit to Kawartha Speedway

FRASERVILLE, ON – Jason Shaw became the first two-time winner on the 2005 Shouldice Stone ALSTAR Late Model Series tour when he led every lap of Friday night’s scheduled 75-lap feature race at Kawartha Speedway.
With the victory, the Guelph, ON racer added to his all-time ALSTAR wins record by collecting his 10th career Shouldice Series checkered flag. The Spira Fire Protection Ford driver started on the outside of the front row and exploded to the lead immediately after taking the initial green flag.
Once out front, Shaw was able to build solid leads and was smooth through traffic. Following each caution period, the former ALSTAR Series champ was able to pull quickly and safely away from his pursuers.
The result was a bit of a relief for Shaw, who has struggled since winning the season opener at Sauble on the May long weekend. Engine woes have plagued the #82 team in several subsequent outings, but there was no sign of trouble on this night as Shaw had the field covered right from the start. At times, the veteran stock car racer was able to put almost a full straightaway between himself and his nearest rival.
“That was a bit of a gimme tonight,” said Shaw in victory lane. “We had a good car tonight. It was good to get that monkey off ours backs.”
Finishing second to Shaw in the series’ first-ever visit to Kawartha Speedway was Glenn Watson of Barrie, ON in the racingracios.com Chevy. Watson started seventh in the 23-car field and mentioned, following the race, that engine trouble kept him from going after the win. “The car had a bit of a miss after halfway and it wasn’t real strong,” said Watson. “So I’m glad with this result.”
The race finished under caution as Shaw took the white flag that signaled the start of the last lap just moments before a spin by Craig Zurbrigg brought out the sixth caution flag of the event. As the field was preparing for a one-lap sprint to the finish, the rain that had delayed the start of the race by 40 minutes returned and the decision was made to throw the checkered flag after 74 laps.
The final podium position went to Tyler Williams, who overcame a mid-race spin en route to bringing his B&L Farm Services / Hank’s Auto Wreckers Ford home in third-place. “I had to work for it pretty hard,” said the Chesley, ON racer of the result. “It’s a great track; it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the place and I think I’d like to come back.”
Reigning Shouldice ALSTAR Series champ Robbie Thompson finished fourth to add to his points lead following the completion of the first half of the ’05 Shouldice ALSTAR schedule. In earlier heat race action at Kawartha Speedway, checkered flags went to Chris Morrow, Kyle Donaldson, Robbie Thompson and Glenn Watson. The next Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Saturday, July 16 at Sunset Speedway, just south of Barrie, Ontario.
