MOSPORT, ONTARIO Nine days ago, Travis Walker sat in the infield at Watkins Glen, doing a “Houdini” escape act as his Netscape/Kensai Racing Acura RSX-Type S suffered a huge front end fire that ended his weekend. Nine days later, Walker and teammate Aaron Povoledo were standing on the podium at the end of the Mosport 200 Grand Am Cup race the first of Walker’s racing career in Grand Am Cup competition.
“If you had seen our Netscape/Kensai Racing Acura RSX-Type S last Thursday, you would never have expected it to be here this weekend,” Walker said. “The whole Kensai Racing team did an amazing job just to get the car here and running.”
Walker qualified the car 13th on the ST class grid, but knew there was much more left in the car. “The alignment was way off a result of rebuilding the car in about 4 days,” Walker said. “But I knew with the changes the team made, the Netscape/Kensai Racing Acura RSX-Type S would be much better in the race.”
That proved to be an understatement as Walker started the race and immediately rocketed his way up the field, moving from 13th to 2nd in class. “The Netscape/Kensai racing Acura RSX-Type S was really good,” Walker said. “I was just driving as hard as I could to re-pay the team for all their work last week.”
After handing the Netscape/Kensai Racing Acura RSX-Type S over to teammate Povoledo, all Walker could do was watch. Povoledo steered the car to a podium finish. “It is a great result for our team,” Walker said. “In a big series like this, it is good to know we have the car and the team to compete at the front.”
The performance by Walker, once again left Kenzai Racing team manager Ray Lee nearly speechless. “We came hoping for a top ten, a top five would be fantastic, but ‘Houdini’ pulled another one out of his hat. I couldn’t believe how he was making his way forward it was magic, no other way to describe it. ‘Houdini’ put in a performance and result that is unparalleled for a rookie's first race in Grand Am Cup.”
It is a short week for the team as they must head back to Quebec for round three of the Hankook championship at St-Felicien next weekend.
