INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA Cameron Motorsports/MMG Financial Formula BMW Junior driver Robert Wickens made impressive strides at the US Grand Prix last weekend, site of rounds seven and eight of the Formula BMW USA championship.
"The track was very hard on tires," Wickens said. "Our wear was a lot higher than expected and that was most of the problem in qualifying." Wickens qualified 10th for the first race of the weekend and seventh for the second race. As he has done all year long, he moved up quickly and asserted himself as a contender. "After our win at Montreal, our Apex Racing USA team had a lot of momentum, and to finish third here in round seven keeps that momentum going," Wickens said.
On Sunday, Wickens once again was able to move up and he crossed the line fifth, only to find out later two drivers ahead of him had been disqualified for technical infractions. "I would have liked to be back on the podium for round eighth, but the points for third really help here at the mid point of the season."
With the two podium finishes, Wickens is now just 3 points out of the lead in second place and is leading the rookie of the year standings.
"It takes a lot of hard work for a new team like Apex Racing USA, but as this was their home race, I really wanted podium finishes for them. Cameron Motorsports and MMG Financial, along with the team have given me all I need to compete at the front. It is good to get these results for all of them."
