Despite taking a heavy hit to his Haldex/NAPA Dodge at Cayuga Speedway last Saturday, Doug Brown will return to action at Barrie Speedway this weekend but in a borrowed car.
“Our primary car was heavily damaged in that crash last weekend and based on our evaluation, it’s beyond repair,” the Brantford racing veteran conceded. “DJ Kennington, who we have been working with on our road course programs, and I worked out an agreement to finish out the year in the car that Randy MacDonald drove to a 10th-place finish at Cayuga. The deal will allow us to fulfill our commitment to our sponsors and hopefully continue our pursuit of a higher place in the standings.”
The car is the same car Doug used in four road course races this season but modified for the ovals. It will be equipped with his motor and drive train.
Although he injured his right hand in the Cayuga crash, the Haldex driver is confident he’ll be ready to go for the balance of the season.
The gritty competitor has had his share of broken bones and bruised body parts before through his previous involvement in competitive motocross and hockey but until last Saturday hadn’t taken a really bad jolt in a stock car.
“I jammed my thumb back in the accident and thought I might have broken my wrist, but the x-rays didn’t reveal anything so I should be ok. I’ve still got some marks on my chest and shoulders where the seat belts and safety restraints did their job,” he added. “We (competitors) should all be thankful for the safety requirements mandated by NASCAR.”
Brown dropped to 15th in the standings as a result of the Cayuga accident but remains confident he can still gain a spot or two with some solid runs over the next three weeks.
“We’ve already spoken to our Title sponsor Haldex and they are happy to see us continue for the balance of the year,” Doug reported following Wednesday’s meeting in Guelph. “Given that the borrowed car is basically white, the paint scheme will be a reverse to the team’s familiar blue car/white trim colours but our sponsors don’t have any hang-ups with that. They have been really supportive of our efforts todate.”
Saturday’s race at Barrie is the 10th of 12 events on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio. The “ATTO 300” is scheduled for an 8:45 p.m. E.T. start on Saturday.
