NCATS: Kent Nuhn at Cayuga... A Bad Start Turns into a Positive Finish

After a grueling couple of weeks of disappointment, Kent Nuhn, driver of the No. 09 the Fuel Genie/Nuhn’s Auto Recyclers Pontiac Grand Prix and his team were ready for some improvement and a good finish.

The weekend did not start off how Nuhn and the team would have liked. After the practice sessions, they had to change the brand new transmission that they had just put in. Unfortunately this meant having to put in the older transmission to which they have had problems with.

The night started off with a bang. Skydivers floated from above the crowd and with racing legend Bobby Allison giving the command to start engines, everyone was ready to go.

Unfortunately for Nuhn, things went bad pretty quickly. With having to change the transmission to an older one, as soon as Nuhn put the car into gear on the first lap the gear shift broke. They pulled the car in to begin repairs, but an eighth lap red flag for a multi-car accident involving No 4 Don Thomson Jr., No 84 J.R. Fitzpatrick and No 10 Doug Brown, stopped the team from quickly fixing the car. After the clean-up crew quickly cleaned up the track, the team was able to finish the repairs on the car and returned to the track on lap 27.

Everything was going well, or as well as could be expected, until lap 100. Nuhn pulled the car back onto pit road and then behind the wall. This time it was electrical, the battery was not holding a charge. After a few more laps, Nuhn drove the car back onto the track for the rest of the race. He realized that coming out of the corners, the charge was good but it would quickly fade, but as quickly as it started, it quickly fixed itself. This enabled Nuhn to finish the race in the 19th position. After the race, the team was all smiles, for finally being able to finish the race despite all the problems.

“We had a good car, but it’s always the little things that get you in the end,” Nuhn said. This 19th place finish brings Nuhn up 17th position in points. The team is now looking forward to return to what they consider their home track at Barrie Speedway for the Atto 300.
