NCATS: Nuhn Survives Riverside despite Battery Problems

ANTIGONISH, NS - Coming into the second last race of the season at Riverside Speedway in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Kent Nuhn, driver of the No. 09 the Fuel Genie/ Nuhns Auto Recyclers Pontiac Grand Prix, and his team were looking forward to racing on a brand new track. This was inaugural race for the teams at this speedway.

On Saturday morning, the weather was cool and with the threat of rain, everyone was worried about whether or not they would be able to race. The drivers were lucky enough to be able to get the two-hour practice session in before the skies opened up and rain fell over the speedway. NASCAR and the track agreed that qualifying and the race would be postponed until Sunday.

By early afternoon on Sunday, the skies were still overcast but there were no threats of rain and everyone was ready to get the race weekend underway. Nuhn qualified in the 18th position with an average speed of 77.945 mph, behind the pole sitter of the No. 1 Monroe Brakes/Mastercraft of Peter Gibbons.

At the beginning of the race, Nuhn’s car was handling the way they wanted it to. By lap 77, he had moved up to the 15th position and looked like he was going to have a great day. But like in the weeks past, the little things started to catch up. After a spin with No. 39 of Dave Whitlock, this left Nuhn a lap down. Unfortunately, he was not able to get the lap back because he was not the first one a lap down.
At half-way he became loose and around lap 170 he thought he was running out of gas. After fuelling up the car, the problem persisted. Nuhn brought the car in again on lap 180, only to find out that the battery was shorting out. After 35 laps, they were able to change the battery, and Nuhn returned to the track.

Nuhn finished the race in the 14th position, only 46 laps down to the race winner the No 9 Dodge of Mark Dilley. “Even though we had another mechanical failure, we are really happy with how this weekend turned out.” Nuhn’s crew chief, Hugh Nuhn said at the end of the race. This finish keeps Nuhn in the 17th position in points, still behind the No. 60 of Ron Beauchamp Jr.
Nuhn and his team are now heading into the final race of the year at Kawartha Speedway, in Fraserville, Ontario for the Dodge Charger 250 presented by Allied Steel Building.
