Merrittville Speedway: Tripleheader focuses on fans

For Immediate Release September 5, 2008.  From Jim Irvine

Thorold, Ontario (September 5) Over the course of the next three days – there will be so many stories to follow and so many point races to watch unfold on the track as Merrittville Speedway is all set to close it’s 57th Season with the J&S Heating Weekend with two nights and an afternoon event – Friday September 5- Sunday September 7th.

Originally set to highlight the annual Reunion Night back on July 12th, the Friday Night portion now includes the 50 lap Lucas Oil Shoot Out for the 358 Modifieds and with it the L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame Inductions.

Before Guest Starter Roger Slack throws his first green flag of the night to start the qualifying action, everyone’s eyes will surely be on the CAA Niagara Stage for the 2008 Ceremonies hosted by the Merrittville Speedway Reunion Committee.

Some of the alumni gathered for the delayed Reunion Night will be called forward out of the grandstand to honor their contributions to the racing community.

“It’s been so hard to keep it under wraps,” reveals (Merrittville Speedway Reunion Committee Chairman) Rick Kavanagh, “but as we do every year … it’s a big surprise … until (Merrittville Announcer) Erik Tomas gets into each inductee’s bio.”

Roger Slack is set to make a rare return to the Starter’s Stand – filling in for Merrittville’s Doug Leonard as previous commitments will make him unavailable for the Friday Night portion of the weekend.

“The three nights present a few staffing issues,” adds (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “we’re honored to have Roger pitch in to help get us through though.”

Slack of course is quite used to the Starter’s role – having done that and probably a host of other tasks at the formerly family-owned Cayuga Speedway growing up before joining the former ASA Series. Most recently, Slack held prominent positions at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte North Carolina in addition to the Dirt Track at Lowe’s.

Towards the end of the final Saturday Night of the season, Tomas will also be one of the first to know the name of the 2008 Merrittville Speedway Super Fan after a front-stretch draw.

A presentation of Raceline Radio and local affiliate 105.1 The River – a pair of tickets will be given away to the Bank of America 500 at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway this October.

“We’re quite honored as well to present our Super Fan with such a prize,” boasted Bicknell, “ thanks so much to Raceline, The River and Lowe’s.”

Back on August 9th the contest kicked off with free ballots handed out each event. The Ballots will still be available Friday and Saturday Nights leading up to the draw.

The lucky winner must be in attendance Saturday Night however to win and the drawing will continue until a winner in attendance is found.
