NCATS: Scott Steckly Cayuga Report

MILVERTON, ON – The 22 Racing team headed to Cayuga Speedway this past Saturday, September 1 for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race. This was the second race at Cayuga this season, with the first resulting in a 12th place finish for driver Scott Steckly. The Milverton, ON driver was hoping he would be able to put on a good show for new sponsors Leafs TV and Wilride Transport. The #22 Leafs TV Dodge Charger practiced and qualified in the middle of the pack, with Steckly started in the 14th position.

The drivers really came to race on Saturday night as the race saw two major crashes mark some of the highlights of the race. The first crash came seven laps into the race and involved four of the front running cars. Because of that crash Scott moved up to fifth race in the race, after only a handful of laps. That crash was all Steckly needed to get the Leafs TV Charger running at the front of the pack. It took the next 50 laps for Scott to work his way into fourth place by passing #3 Jason Hathaway.

Off a restart on lap 84 Steckly put the Leafs TV Dodge Charger up into the top-3 passing #25 Jim Lapcevich. Scott would remain in third place until lap 113, when he got caught on the outside line and was passed by three cars putting him back to sixth place. The team had an excellent pit stop on lap 124 and that gained one position for the team, moving the team back into the top-five.

However, the day was not all good news for Steckly. He was involved in an incident with three other cars on lap 157, as a result a load bolt holding in the right rear spring in place broke and the team lost 39 laps fixing the problem on pit road under green flag conditions. Steckly finished in 16th place.

Scott was disappointed in the result saying “we are thrilled to have Leafs TV onboard as a primary sponsor for the rest of the year at our Ontario races. We had a great car tonight, but just didn’t get the finish again. We have had top-five cars every race this year, which is a credit to out crew chief Greg Gibson and the crew at the shop”.

In the drive for the 2007 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship, Scott Steckly currently sits in 10th place.
