SASKATOON, SK - What a night of racing. Good old crash, bang and burn racing was back at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway on Thursday night with the Annual Ultimate Enduro. New sponsors Saskatoon Media Group and FGI Supply were on board as 27 cars from around the province tested their skills, endurance and luck through 300 grueling laps of old style enduro style racing.
The night was broken into three segments of 100 laps each, with 15 minutes between segments to bandaid the cars back together. In anything goes racing, the main tools you see used in the pits is cutting torches, welders and sledge hammers. The pits are filled with spare tires and spare radiators, along with pails and pails of water.
The Enduro, described as a rolling demolition derby, was moved to Thursday night as heavy rains last Sunday made conditions too difficult to hold the event. It was a gamble going with Thursday, but drivers and fans responded well, coming out to brave the cool evening in good numbers.
The race got off to a crashing start as the #94 driven by rookie Sarah Pagoda rear ended Adam Yelland in corner four on the very first lap, driving right underneath Yelland, leaving tire tracks on Pagoda’s windshield. The carburetor was sheared off, engulfing the entire front end of the car in flames as track safety crews rushed to the scene.
Rather than giving up, while mom Mickey Pagoda continued the race in the #49, the Pagoda family set to work on the putting the #94 car back together and had Sarah back out on the track for the second segment.
The first 100 lap segment was won by #85 Leo Mireau, with Trent Seidel coming in second in the #88 and Kevin Nixey taking third with the #38.
The second 100 lap segment had the checkered flag thrown four laps early as Gary Ejack in the #24 hit the inside front wall so hard, he moved four of the 14,000 pound concrete blocks over a foot. Cars were sent back to their pits while crews moved the blocks back into place, with the four laps added to the third segment. The second segment was won by
#8 Dan Pearce. #77 John Brown came in second and #85 Leo Mireau was third.
The night was taking its toll on the cars as only 15 were left to start the third segment. Amazingly, the #24 of Gary Ejack was one of those cars, after his crash ended the second segment. Dan Pearce was again first in the #8, #12 Norm Reitter was second, and the #22 with brothers Bill and Doug Rea sharing the driving was third.
With one point per position in each segment, Dan Pearce in the #8 and
#77 John Brown shared the championship at 72 points each. #85 Leo Mireau was third with 70 points, Kevin Nixey in the #38 was fourth with
69 points and Trent Seidel was fifth in the #88 with 65 points.
