Brockville Ontario Speedway: Release 7-2008 // May 24, 2008
BROCKVILLE, ON - Going into 2008, Danny O Brien and Chris Raabe would have probably been considered the favorities in the 358 Modified and Sportsman divisions respectively at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Opening night was a night that both would have just as soon forgotten as O Brien damaged the motor on his car with 6 laps to go while leading. Raabe was also in the lead when he got caught up in a mishap on a restart. However, as champions tend to do, both bounced right back with victories on Saturday night at the Beast of the East.
O Brien started fourth in the 30 lap 358 Modified feature but quickly was on the tail of opening night winner Jessica Zemken. Zemken guarded the low groove for the first 22 laps thwarting numerous attempts by O Brien to get by. However, Zemken's car got loose on a late restart providing the Pocket Rocket with the break he needed to blast by and take the lead for good.
"We hurt the motor real bad last week," said a smiling O Brien in victory lane, "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for engine builder Pat Morrison, he pulled out a miracle for us this week." Zemken grabbed the point lead all to herself with a strong second place finish, just in front of teammate Brian McDonald. Kyle Dingwall finished fourth with Bobby Herrington rounding out the fast five.
Raabe also started in the second row but wasted no time in getting to the front and dominating the entire 25 lap Sportsman main. Cole Dingwall made some nifty moves in the second half of the event but couldn't get close enough to reel in the Napanee teenager. Tyler Rand was a solid third with Matt Billings and Adam Turner in tow.
Steve Billings made it two in a row after a real battle with Dana Aikens in the 20 lap Street Stock feature. Billings and Aikens came together on the front straight with the impact cutting down the leaders tire and allowing Billings to pretty much coast to another win. Billy Code jumped aboard brother Jack's car and gave it a run through the pack to second in front of Benoit Dubois, Kevin Campbell and Art Brown. Josh Kane is also two for two after going wire to wire in the 16 lap Rookie event. Steve Barber kept with the leader early, but fell back late to finish second followed by Frank Mitchell Jr, Ron Day and Dwight Feltham. Paul Billings claimed the checkered flag in the 10 lap Vintage car finale.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action on Saturday night, May 31st with the first ever appearance by the Southern Ontario Sprint Car group. Joyceville's Rick Wilson leads the SOS point standings coming his old home track. The night will also include all four BOS regular classes, 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies. The green flag drops at 7pm.
