August 16, 2009. David Thorndyke and the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com Chevrolet team arrived at Trois Rivieres, Quebec for round number nine of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series with the expectation of improved performance from their last outing. While the team battled through difficulties in practice and qualifying a broke axle would finish their race day early.
As practice for the 40th edition of the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres got underway on Friday afternoon the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com Chevy used the limited track time to work on the correct set up for qualifying. Trouble would arise during qualifying and would prove to be a handful for the team as both the water and oil temperature went sky high. “We had both the oil and water temperatures way too high” said David Thorndyke. “We worked to correct the problem for the race and felt we’d be in good shape” he added.
As the green flag waved for the GP3R 100 on at steamy Sunday afternoon Thorndyke would start from the tail end of the field and looked to take it easy initially and wait for the race to come to him. Through the early laps that appeared to be working as the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing Chevrolet moved up several positions. As the laps ticked away the driver would discover another problem.
Nearing the midpoint of the race Thorndyke felt a problem in what he believed to be the clutch or the rear end gear. “There was a lot of banging and crunching going on” said the driver. During a full course caution period the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing Chevrolet would make a number of pit stops as the team worked hard to diagnose the problem. It was discovered that the rear axle was broken and their day was done early. “We came in and jacked it up, thought we could do something with it but it turned out to be a broken axle, and we were all done for the day” said the frustrated driver. “It’s too bad, the car was going okay, a lot of guys were going off and we had fixed all our earlier problems. We knew that attrition would be high and we thought we could have gained a lot of spots and were in position to have a good finish, but it just wasn’t to be” added David Thorndyke.
David Thorndyke and the EVT Chevrolet team will be in action next in two weeks as the NASCAR Canadian Tire series competes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on August 30th as part of the Nationwide series race weekend. The race will also be broadcast on TSN.
