My most interesting date ever

This happened about a few months ago, but I thought it warranted a post because it was one of the most interesting experiences of my life.

I met this girl online, let's call her Ms. T. It seemed like we had a whole lot in common. We both work at business schools, both got MBAs at the University of Utah, we had similar interests, had similar goals for the future, and were pretty close in age. I thought it she sounded like a decent match at least, so I asked her to go to dinner one night. She said that she liked Mexican food, so I found a decent Mexican restaurant close to where she lives and set the date up. Picking the restaurant was probably my first mistake.

So the time came and I met Ms. T. at the restaurant. I could tell something wasn't quite right from the beginning. It was like she didn't want to look at me or even talk to me. She answered questions with one word answers that didn't give me a lot to work with. When we got to our table, she started on the chips and salsa as fast as she could, probably so she didn't have to talk to me. I thought this was really strange and just sat there wondering what I had done in a few minutes to make this girl hate me. About 20 minutes of this passed and I was starting to think of ways to escape.

After about 20 minutes, she finally asked me a question. She asked how old I really was. This was odd to me because I had already told her online, but I answered and said "29." She seemed relieved a little bit and started to open up a little more. She told me that I looked like I was around 22-23 years old.

Her next question was even more surprising. Again, I met this girl online and she had seen some of my pictures. There shouldn't have been any surprise about my appearance right? Well, she asked what my background was, specifically if I was Mexican. I had to say no, I was just a typical American. I have a mixed background - mostly European with a little bit of Native American. When I finally convinced her of this, she seemed even more relieved and opened up a little bit more.

The rest of the dinner was pretty much normal, thank heavens. It was very interesting though, she was the one that liked Mexican food, she even spent a lot of time doing a study program in Mexico and had learned a little Spanish. She asked for some specific Mexican dishes, which they didn't have on the menu, but which she knew the Spanish name for. So that was her background, but she seemed very offended because she thought I was a young Mexican boy asking her out.

This date was very interesting to me because I haven't felt that kind of discrimination in a long time. I also don't know what in the world she was thinking. She had all the information to start with, none of it should have been a surprise. It made me start to ponder about how silly people are.

Silly computer

I was working on installing Ubuntu on a computer at work today and ran into a couple interesting errors. I've installed various versions of Linux on various machines and have never seen errors like this. I had to run the install five or six times and in the end, I wasn't successful at getting that particular machine to run it.

The first error came from Ubuntu itself. The install kept saying that either the hard drive or the install media was bad. It could have been the hard drive, but I've used the CD on other machines without a problem. After a couple of other error dialogs, I eventually saw this screen:

Don't worry, the installation is at 123% but it will finish soon. I like how the progress bar still isn't full. I wonder what it would eventually reach - 150%? 166%?

The other fun message came when I looked through that computer's BIOS settings to see if there was anything strange with the drive. I found this screen:

This one is just plain silly. I had just rebooted the computer and entered System Setup, so how am I supposed to change the password? Not only that, but it's telling me to power off the system to enter System Setup. How can I do that if the machine is powered off?

Artist Night!

I recently started reading "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron and thought that I'd give the artists night thing a try. I'm sure my attempts will not turn into anything grand, but I thought it sounded like fun.

My first evening was indeed great fun and I couldn't stop laughing as I put these two videos together. The videos turned out horribly, but that doesn't matter.

I bought some cheap play dough at the dollar store and disassembled one of my computers to make a stage area. That was part of the fun, I normally don't like to have computers in pieces, but it was worth it.

The first video was just a test, but I liked it. I put my aging digital camera on the desk and just snapped pictures of some dough. I didn't even mold the blue dough into anything. That's how it came out of the canister. I used Windows Movie Maker to stitch the pictures together - simple enough. I didn't intend to turn this first attempt into a video, but it turned out well enough.

The second video was an adventure. I had plenty of ideas of what I wanted to do with it, but they kept changing as I took the pictures. Unfortunately, my good camera's batteries died after the first video was complete so all the pictures were taken with my phone's camera. I couldn't control the focus or brightness as well on the phone as I can on the camera so you'll see colors and stuff change. Oh well.

That's it for my first artist night. I can't wait until next Tuesday for the next one!

2011 Belmont Stakes Betting: Take Nehro Over Animal Kingdom, Shackleford

Belmont Stakes Odds2011 Belmont Stakes betting is hitting high gear as the final race of the Triple Crown will be run this Saturday at Belmont Park, and even though we won’t have a winner of the Triple Crown, we should still get an exciting 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes, the longest of the races at 1.5 miles. While everyone is falling over themselves to wager on Animal Kingdom and Shackleford, the winner will be a horse that had a brilliant run at the Kentucky Derby, and sat out the Preakness.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom (+200) should be running for the Crown now, but he came up just short in the Preakness Stakes against Shackleford (+450), who is probably the fastest horse out of the gates, which he proved at Churchill Downs and Pimlico. Mucho Macho Man (+600) will be in the mix after a third-place run in the Derby, and a sixth-place run in the Preakness, but his run at Pimlico was compromised by a lost shoe, the second time that has happened to Mucho Macho Man. He has new shoes that shouldn’t come off now, so look for this horse to push the lead group.
The longshots to watch for online horse betting players are Master of Hounds (+1200) and Santiva (+1500), and Master of Hounds is a horse from Ireland, where they bred horses for endurance rather than speed, so that should help for the Preakness. Santiva has been up and down when it comes to his most recent races, and he’s run against some pretty talented fields, so it all depends which Santiva decides to show up on Saturday. Both horses have been off since the Derby, so they’ll be rested.
But the horse to wager on is Nehro (+400), who would be the guy who sneaks into the ring out of nowhere to draw a comparison to WWE Monday Night Raw. Nehro finished second in the Derby, his third consecutive runner-up finish in a race, and along with Animal Kingdom, he made a late run to surge past the field. His handlers held him out of the Preakness in hopes that he’ll be 100% for the Belmont, and it appears as though he is in good shape heading into the final Triple Crown race. He was getting stronger as the Derby wore on, which is excellent when discussing the 1.5-mile Belmont, and he’ll hope to do it again. A saying goes in sports, if you put yourself in position to win enough times, eventually you’ll win, and Nehro has done that plenty in recent months. Get a little value and go with Nehro in your online sportsbook.

Wisconsin narrowly opposes gay marriage

Though voters nationwide are trending in favor of legal gay marriage, Wisconsinites still oppose it by a slight margin with 42% in favor of legal gay marriage and 46% opposed. Support for legal gay marriage is a bit lower than in neighboring Minnesota where it is neck and neck at +1(46/45). This narrow margin in Wisconsin stands in contrast to results from 2006 in which Wisconsin voted to ban both gay marriage and civil unions by a solid 19 points. There is both a large age and gender gap on the issue in Wisconsin. Those 18-29 support legal gay marriage +21(58/37) while those older than 65 are in opposition -25(30/55). Women support legal gay marriage +12(49-37) compared to strong opposition from men -21(34/55)

Retiring Democratic Senator Herb Kohl is seeing a bit of a retirement bump with a strong 56% approval rating and only 29% disapproval. This is up from his +20(50/30) rating in March.

As more voters get to know him, freshman Republican Senator Ron Johnson is holding relatively steady with a 35% approval rating and 33% disapproval. This is similar to the +4(32/28) ratings Johnson received in March. Johnson’s ratings are fairly polarized with Republicans approving +62(69/7) and Democrats disapproving -55(7/62).

Voters in his home state are no more enamored with new RNC chairman Reince Priebus than Marylanders are with Michael Steele. 11% view Priebus favorably and 21% unfavorably, though most do not venture an opinion. He is seen favorably within his own party though +12(22/10).

Massachusetts on the health care plans

Voters in Massachusetts like the health care plan that Mitt Romney signed into law as Governor and they like the one Barack Obama signed into law as President too...but overall they like Romneycare better than Obamacare.

53% say they support Romney's plan to 33% who are opposed while 50% say they support Obama's plan with 40% in opposition. The main reason Romney's plan is more popular is that independents narrowly support what he did on health care (45/42) while they still oppose Obama's plan (35/54). Democrats support both of the plans but unsurprisingly like Obama's (77/11) better than Romney's (67/17). Republicans likewise oppose both of the plans but do give Romney's better marks (27/57) than Obama's (7/88).

Even though most Republicans in the state oppose what Romney did on health care they don't go so far as to say he needs to apologize for it. Just 32% think he should take that step to 50% opposed to an apology and 18% unsure.

Romney's health care plan may be more popular than Obama's in Massachusetts but does that translate into Presidential support in the state? Not so much. We'll have those numbers tomorrow.

Deval Patrick's amazing rise

If there was a 'comeback player of the year' award in American politics it would be hard to give it to anyone other than Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. In January of 2010 we found him with a 22% approval rating and 59% of voters disapproving. Our newest poll in the state finds those numbers almost completely reversed with 54% of voters now saying he's doing a good job to 36% who dissent. That's a 55 point climb in Patrick's net approval over the last 17 months and he's the only politician who's ever seen that kind of resurrection in his image during the time we've been polling on a national basis.

Patrick won reelection by 6 points in November despite his putrid approval numbers earlier in the year and he's just continuing to get stronger. Voters say that if they went to the polls now 54% of their votes would go to Patrick compared to only 32% for GOP nominee Charlie Baker and 9% for independent Tim Cahill. Those numbers represent a 16 point climb from his actual margin of victory.

2 big takeaways from Patrick's numbers:

-It really would be in the best interest of Democrats if he rethought his decision not to run for the Senate next year. With the Democratic field so unsettled and no field clearing candidates in the race or likely to join it any time soon, Patrick really has months to change his mind and run a perfectly viable campaign. We didn't test him head to head against Scott Brown on this poll, but his approval numbers are better than Brown's and although my guess is that the incumbent would still lead in a head to head I think it would be pretty close.

-North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue's people should be talking to Patrick's people to figure out what the heck he did to turn his numbers around so dramatically. Obviously Massachusetts and North Carolina are very different states and it's going to be easier for a Dem to get things turned around in the Bay State. But there have to be lessons in Patrick's amazing turnaround that Perdue could apply as she deals with chronically poor approval numbers heading into a tough fight for reelection.

Library Wants Tax Vote

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh wants to know if city residents are willing to raise their property taxes to help keep the system in the black. The library and its volunteers have launched a petition drive to place a referendum on the November ballot that would ask voters to raise their property taxes by .25 mills.

“That would be used exclusively, only, for the operation and maintenance of this system, which thousands upon thousands upon thousands of us across this entire city, and really this region, value as a corner stone,” said Library Board Member and Pittsburgh City Councilman Patrick Dowd.

The tax amounts to $25 dollars for every $100,000 of assessed value on residential and commercial property. The millage rate increase would raise between $3.25 and $3.5 million dollars a year. The library system is facing a projected deficit of $5 million in 2014.

Board Member and Allegheny County Judge Frank Lucchino says the library is looking at other income generating options. Also being pursued is a campaign to increase the library’s endowment, asking the Regional Asset District for more money, doubling individual giving, increasing corporate and foundation giving and working with state and local governments to find ways to boost revenues. Lucchino tired to fend off arguments that a tax increase would make the city less competitive in the fight for economic development. “The library is the future of the city and the library makes it more competitive.”

“115 years this library has been here and now the people will have a voice on deciding do they want this library to continue,” said Lucchino, “It will be up to them.”

To get on the ballot, supporters need to collect about 2,800 signatures. Lucchino has set a goal of collecting 9,000 signatures to avoid any problems if names are disqualified.

Pittsburgh School District Considers Closing More Schools

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Linda Lane has outlined the process to determine recommendations for school closings and realignment for the 2012-13 school year.

Lane told the Board of Education's Budget Committee that as enrollment continues to fall the district cannot afford to pay for empty seats in school buildings....

"Every dollar we spend on underutilized bricks and mortar is one less dollar we have available to spend towards improving the life prospects of our students.”

Lane says they will now use the 2009 DeJong facilities report along with an academic performance assessment and budgetary analysis to develop a plan for further downsizing.
“Our commitment is to have an open dialogue with the community about the need to close schools.”

The superintendent said to determine schools to be recommended for closure, they've begun an internal review process of all schools based upon four equally weighted measures:

1) Student Achievement- AYP; Student Growth
2) Student Enrollment- Enrollment vs. Capacity
3) Facility Condition- DeJong study rating
4) Operations Costs- Utilities, custodial, etc.

In 2009,the national consulting firm DeJong developed a long-term facilities plan for the district. In 2006, the district closed 22 under-utilized and low-achieving schools and in the last 4 years another 5 schools were shut down.

Lane says recommendations will be brought forward later this year and then there will be a public input period.

Student enrollment is 25,046 with an estimated 11,165 seats of excess capacity.

CDBG Bills Put on Hold

Pittsburgh Council has voted to hold legislation that would change the way the city distributes federal Community Development Block Grants.

Councilman Ricky Burgess says the current law divides Pittsburgh’s CDBG funding evenly among the nine Council Districts. Burgess says his bills would instead give the money to Council Districts based on how many CDBG-eligible blocks the District has.

A block would be CDBG-eligible if 80% or more of its households earned less than about $29,000 per year.

The legislation would also raise the minimum grant level to $5,000 and require that the money be spent within three years, or it would be withdrawn. Burgess says he’d also like to require six summer meetings where community groups citywide could explain their development plans to Council.

But Councilwoman Darlene Harris says she doesn’t support the bills. She says $5,000 is too high a minimum for the grants, because it would be a “major undertaking” to try to give that much money to every community group who receives funding now.

Councilmen Doug Shields and Bruce Kraus say they feel they are being characterized as unfeeling for poorer communities by Burgess’ legislation. Shields says none of the CDBG funding is being given to groups who aren’t eligible for it.

The legislation has been held for a week; in the meantime, Councilwoman Theresa Smith says Council has a meeting with Mayor Luke Ravenstahl on the topic.

Midnight Drama: Political brawl continues, lessons to be learnt

A delicious irony of midnight crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his supporters is that both the “perpetrator and the victim” are reeling under its impact. While the prime minister has defended police action, even the lathi- charge, the general impression is that the action has aggravated government’s agony in stead of salvaging it. The question being asked in political circles is that why the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi were keeping mum when party’s senior leader, Digvijay Singh, was calling Ramdev a “maha thug”.

The impression one gathers after talking to politicians of different hues is that both the sides have to learn lessons from this gory episode. As for Baba, eyebrows were being raised over the manner in which huge money was being spent on arrangements at Ramlila Maidan. Not only this. Baba himself had come by a chartered plane to begin his statyagraha. Now, doubts are being expressed in some quarters over the allegations about police atrocities being leveled by Baba and his supporters. Fingers are also being raised at the anti-political stance taken by Baba.

The truth is that the sharing of his platform by known hardliners like Ritambara had led to full- throated backing of the BJP and the RSS. Again, there is enough evidence to suggest that Baba had not done his home work well. He wanted death sentence for corrupt people but already debate is on in the country over the continuance of death sentence. Ideally, taking a cue from Anna who had legal luminaries with him, Baba should have consulted some economists.

There is a lesson for the government too. Observers feel that it should have not acted in such a hurry. After the contents of Acharya Balkrishan’s letter were made public, the sting in Baba’s agitation had been diluted. His protest could have lost its steam in a day or two. By resorting to police action, the government gave it a fresh lease of life. The government also failed to realize the fact that if it had allowed Baba’s fast to continue, the Anna camp, which is now united with him, would have broken away.

The government has also to realize the fact that the role of civil society players is going to increase as one after the other scam is getting exposed and the government is not able to tackle the fallout. The result is that, the moral outrage against the government is growing fast.

Susan Corbett Wants Arts Funds Restored to Budget

Susan Corbett, Chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and First Lady of the Commonwealth wants money restored to the state budget.

According to newspapers, the House Appropriations Committee cut funds for the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts from the governor's proposed budget. According to Susan Corbett, speaking at the Arts Council Annual Meeting on Wednesday morning, Tom Corbett had left the arts funding in this year's budget the same as last years. But the money that the House Committee cut, approximately $6 million dollars is mostly in administrative costs. The arts are currently funded at $8.2 million dollars.

"This reduction in funding is pretty shocking and actually takes the level of funding back to 1979, 1980 levels of funding. Which means we just lost 30 years of advocacy for the arts," she said at the meeting.

Corbett says that money pays off in people's quality of life.

Obama strong in Minnesota

In 2000 and 2004 Minnesota was one of the closest states in the country in the Presidential race, with John Kerry winning it by 3 points and Al Gore by only 2. But Barack Obama had a blow out win there in 2008 and if the state voted today 2012 would be more of the same- Obama has wide leads over all of the Republican candidates in the state, even former Governor Tim Pawlenty.

Obama is decently popular in Minnesota with 51% of voters approving of him to 44% who disapprove. He is incredibly polarizing as he is most places, but there are slightly more Republicans (6%) who approve of him than there are Democrats (4%) who disapprove. Combine that with the state's Democratic identification advantage and the fact that he breaks even with independents and it's a formula for polling over 50%.

Obama's approval spread is +7 but he leads the Republicans we tested against him by anywhere from 8 to 21 points. That's because Obama's strong early leads have less to do with him being popular than the GOP field being incredibly unpopular in Minnesota. Home state candidate Pawlenty has the 'best' favorability numbers but still comes down at a -13 spread (40/53). Next best is Herman Cain at -18 (17/35), then Mitt Romney at -24 (29/53), Michele Bachmann at -26 (33/59), Sarah Palin at -35 (30/65), and Newt Gingrich at -48 (17/65).

Why are the Republicans all so unpopular? There are two themes running through their numbers. They are all considerably more unpopular with Democrats than they are with GOP voters. That's something that will probably change at least a little bit once the party has a candidate and the base starts to unite around that person. The second theme is a bigger concern- these folks are all a big turn off to independent voters. Pawlenty has the best numbers with independent at a -6 spread, the nominal frontrunner at this point Romney has a -17 spread, and Palin who joins Romney near the top of the national GOP polling right now is at -34 with them. That's something Republicans will have to find a way to overcome.

Obama defeated McCain by 10 points in 2008 in Minnesota. Only Pawlenty improves on that performance, trailing by 8 points at 51-43. Romney trails by 15 points at 51-36, Gingrich is down 18 at 54-36, Palin has a 20 point deficit at 56-36, Bachmann is 21 points back in her home state at 56-35, and Cain starts 21 points behind as well at 51-30.

Over the last couple weeks PPP polls have found Obama in a strong position in the former swing states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. His strength in those places should put him in a position to work to expand the electoral map again next year as he did in 2008.
