"We were reminiscing the other day about our first jobs. I recall mine vividly.
I was six when I began selling chips, peanuts and pop at the old Pinecrest Speedway.
In retrospect it wasn't a job, but rather an introduction to the intoxicating world of stock car racing -- and if you measured the air quality at Pinecrest in the '60s, gas and oil fumes coupled with peeling rubber and steamed Shopsy hot dogs, you'd know intoxicating is an appropriate description.
From 1951 through 1976 the quarter-mile oval race track between Jane and Keele Sts., on the south side of Hwy. 7 welcomed crowds of between 10,000 and 15,000. ..."
