John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick and the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet team were among the fastest cars and toughest competitors at every event on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule. This past weekend at the year end awards banquet the series celebrated its inaugural season and Fitzpatrick and the Milwaukee Electric Tools team were there to collect some hardware.
There were occasions when the year was a bit of a struggle and the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy team was not getting the results they expected. "I've been watching the DVD's of the races and we were fast all year" said Fitzpatrick. Sometimes we didn't have the luck we should have, we got bounced around at a couple of races but the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy was fast all year".
The Milwaukee Electric Tools Team also showed a flair for the dramatic on several occasions this year. Fitzpatrick scored the first win of the season for the team at Sun Valley Speedway near Vernon, BC and backed it up with a last lap pass the following weekend at the city centre airport course in Edmonton.
The blazing speed of the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy was on display at the next three races as Fitzpatrick posted the fastest qualifying lap at all three races. Fitzpatrick started seven of the twelve races this season from the front row.
J.R. would score the Bud pole award for the season by winning the three consecutive race awards. The 19 year old was also voted the most popular driver in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in voting done in online balloting. Fitzpatrick was also voted stock car racer of the year by Inside Track Magazine.
"I'm pretty pumped about winning the awards, especially the racer of the year, that's pretty nice. We had a good season, just didn't have any luck at some of the races where we got beat up a little bit. Sixth overall isn't bad, but we'd certainly like to come back next year and get back to that championship form we showed before, and I'm confident the Milwaukee Electric Tools team can do that".
The inaugural season of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series featured oval tracks, temporary street circuits and road courses across the country in 2007. All races were shown on TSN. More information on the series can be obtained by visiting www.nascar.ca
