The first Asian American movie star to become an international star, Anna May Wong's career spanned over four decades, starting in Technicolor’s first two-strip color movie, The Toll of the Sea (1922) and was chosen by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. to be in The Thief of Bagdad (1924), and co-starred with Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express (1932).

"JAVA HEAD: The port city of Bristol, England, in the 1800s is home to Java Head, a sailing ship line company. The owner has two sons. One, a handsome seafarer, is in love with a local girl, but cannot marry her due to a long-running feud between their fathers. His other son, a "landlubber", seeks to convert to steamships, to the disgust of his father. Even worse, he is secretly dealing in contraband."

DVD Giveaway - The Arbor - NOW CLOSED

British artist and filmmaker Clio Barnard's acclaimed documentary The Arbor is released on DVD and Blu-ray this coming Monday, 14th March, and to celebrate the lovely people at Verve Pictures have kindly supplied three copies of the DVD to give away to our readers.



The Arbor, which tells the powerful true story of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar (The Arbor, Rita, Sue and Bob Too) and her daughter Lorraine, was been nominated for a host of awards this past year including the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer (Clio Barnard and producer Tracy O'Riordan), while Barnard was the recipient of the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards.

Andrea Dunbar died tragically at the age of 29 in 1990, leaving ten year old Lorraine with bitter childhood memories. The Arbor catches up with Lorraine in the present day, also aged 29, ostracised from her mother’s family and in prison undergoing rehab. Re-introduced to her mother’s plays and letters, the film follows Lorraine’s personal journey as she reflects on her own life and begins to understand the struggles her mother faced. Through interviews with other members of the Dunbar family, we see a contrasting view of Andrea, in particular from Lorraine’s younger sister Lisa, who idolises Andrea to this day.



Barnard, who was the deserved winner of The Best New Documentary Film Maker at the Tribecca Film Festival earlier this year, recorded audio interviews with Lorraine Dunbar, other members of the Dunbar family and residents from the Buttershaw Estate over a period of two years. These interviews were edited to form an audio ‘screenplay,’ which forms the basis of the film as actors lip-synch to the voices of the interviewees. This footage was intercut with extensive archive clips as well as extracts from Andrea’s first stage play, The Arbor, filmed as a live outdoor performance on the Buttershaw Estate, to an audience of its residents. The excellent cast includes Manjinder Virk, Neil Dudgeon, Monica Dolan, Danny Webb, Christine Bottomley, Kathryn Pogson, Natalie Gavin, Jonathan Jaynes and Jimi Mistry.

Well, you mightn't get your hands on the Batman franchise just yet but everyone has to start somewhere, so why not check out the latest competition from innocent drinks, who have been running a new marketing campaign here in the UK featuring a superhero smoothie who 'saves the peckish', and now they want you to helm the sequel!

If you're a budding filmmaker and want to be in with a chance of bagging a rather fantastic prize of £5000 cash, two tickets to the London Film Festival and your own film broadcast on prime-time television, the Innocent Mini Movies Competition could be your ticket to success. Shoot a 30 second mini movie where our innocent caped superhero saves the day. It could be anything from rescuing someone from a boring meeting to saving a kitten from a burning tree - the more imaginative the better. To help you on your way to a mini masterpiece, we’ve created some downloadable film kits and ‘how to’ guides, which are available on the website.

Upload your mini superhero sequel to Youtube by 17th April. Our panel of expert judges - including Ben Wheatley (our ad director), Dan Germain (creative director at innocent) and Uri Fruchtman (owner and executive producer of Ealing Studios) and Tim O'Kennedy (Chief Exec of the D&AD)– will then narrow down all the videos to the top 5. The good 'ol public will then vote for their winner, who will get their film screened on prime-time TV, £5000 in cash and 2 tickets to the London Film Festival.

To help you get on your way, innocent have kindly supplied us with ten 'mini film kits', which include a smoothie bottle, superhero cape and random selection of props to get you on your way. DVD Giveaway - Arrivederci Millwall and The Football Factory - NOW CLOSED

March 21st sees the long-overdue DVD release of 1992's hard-hitting football hooligan flick Arrivederci Millwall, which is arriving in stores as part of a double-pack alongside a film it went on to inspire, The football Factory. To celebrate, we've got our hands on three copies of the set to give away to our readers courtesy of the fine folk at Vertigo Films.

Adapted by Nick Perry from his award-winning play of the same name, Arrivederci Millwall follows the exploits of an unofficial Task Force of English football hooligans as they prepare to invade Spain for the 1982 World Cup. Check out the trailer here.

Meanwhile Nick Love's The football Factory is a study of middle England, football violence and male culture. Based on John King's cult novel, the film stars Danny Dyer as a young hooligan who finds himself on the wrong side of the head of a rival firm.
