Silly computer

I was working on installing Ubuntu on a computer at work today and ran into a couple interesting errors. I've installed various versions of Linux on various machines and have never seen errors like this. I had to run the install five or six times and in the end, I wasn't successful at getting that particular machine to run it.

The first error came from Ubuntu itself. The install kept saying that either the hard drive or the install media was bad. It could have been the hard drive, but I've used the CD on other machines without a problem. After a couple of other error dialogs, I eventually saw this screen:

Don't worry, the installation is at 123% but it will finish soon. I like how the progress bar still isn't full. I wonder what it would eventually reach - 150%? 166%?

The other fun message came when I looked through that computer's BIOS settings to see if there was anything strange with the drive. I found this screen:

This one is just plain silly. I had just rebooted the computer and entered System Setup, so how am I supposed to change the password? Not only that, but it's telling me to power off the system to enter System Setup. How can I do that if the machine is powered off?

Artist Night!

I recently started reading "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron and thought that I'd give the artists night thing a try. I'm sure my attempts will not turn into anything grand, but I thought it sounded like fun.

My first evening was indeed great fun and I couldn't stop laughing as I put these two videos together. The videos turned out horribly, but that doesn't matter.

I bought some cheap play dough at the dollar store and disassembled one of my computers to make a stage area. That was part of the fun, I normally don't like to have computers in pieces, but it was worth it.

The first video was just a test, but I liked it. I put my aging digital camera on the desk and just snapped pictures of some dough. I didn't even mold the blue dough into anything. That's how it came out of the canister. I used Windows Movie Maker to stitch the pictures together - simple enough. I didn't intend to turn this first attempt into a video, but it turned out well enough.

The second video was an adventure. I had plenty of ideas of what I wanted to do with it, but they kept changing as I took the pictures. Unfortunately, my good camera's batteries died after the first video was complete so all the pictures were taken with my phone's camera. I couldn't control the focus or brightness as well on the phone as I can on the camera so you'll see colors and stuff change. Oh well.

That's it for my first artist night. I can't wait until next Tuesday for the next one!

2011 Belmont Stakes Betting: Take Nehro Over Animal Kingdom, Shackleford

Belmont Stakes Odds2011 Belmont Stakes betting is hitting high gear as the final race of the Triple Crown will be run this Saturday at Belmont Park, and even though we won’t have a winner of the Triple Crown, we should still get an exciting 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes, the longest of the races at 1.5 miles. While everyone is falling over themselves to wager on Animal Kingdom and Shackleford, the winner will be a horse that had a brilliant run at the Kentucky Derby, and sat out the Preakness.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom (+200) should be running for the Crown now, but he came up just short in the Preakness Stakes against Shackleford (+450), who is probably the fastest horse out of the gates, which he proved at Churchill Downs and Pimlico. Mucho Macho Man (+600) will be in the mix after a third-place run in the Derby, and a sixth-place run in the Preakness, but his run at Pimlico was compromised by a lost shoe, the second time that has happened to Mucho Macho Man. He has new shoes that shouldn’t come off now, so look for this horse to push the lead group.
The longshots to watch for online horse betting players are Master of Hounds (+1200) and Santiva (+1500), and Master of Hounds is a horse from Ireland, where they bred horses for endurance rather than speed, so that should help for the Preakness. Santiva has been up and down when it comes to his most recent races, and he’s run against some pretty talented fields, so it all depends which Santiva decides to show up on Saturday. Both horses have been off since the Derby, so they’ll be rested.
But the horse to wager on is Nehro (+400), who would be the guy who sneaks into the ring out of nowhere to draw a comparison to WWE Monday Night Raw. Nehro finished second in the Derby, his third consecutive runner-up finish in a race, and along with Animal Kingdom, he made a late run to surge past the field. His handlers held him out of the Preakness in hopes that he’ll be 100% for the Belmont, and it appears as though he is in good shape heading into the final Triple Crown race. He was getting stronger as the Derby wore on, which is excellent when discussing the 1.5-mile Belmont, and he’ll hope to do it again. A saying goes in sports, if you put yourself in position to win enough times, eventually you’ll win, and Nehro has done that plenty in recent months. Get a little value and go with Nehro in your online sportsbook.

Wisconsin narrowly opposes gay marriage

Though voters nationwide are trending in favor of legal gay marriage, Wisconsinites still oppose it by a slight margin with 42% in favor of legal gay marriage and 46% opposed. Support for legal gay marriage is a bit lower than in neighboring Minnesota where it is neck and neck at +1(46/45). This narrow margin in Wisconsin stands in contrast to results from 2006 in which Wisconsin voted to ban both gay marriage and civil unions by a solid 19 points. There is both a large age and gender gap on the issue in Wisconsin. Those 18-29 support legal gay marriage +21(58/37) while those older than 65 are in opposition -25(30/55). Women support legal gay marriage +12(49-37) compared to strong opposition from men -21(34/55)

Retiring Democratic Senator Herb Kohl is seeing a bit of a retirement bump with a strong 56% approval rating and only 29% disapproval. This is up from his +20(50/30) rating in March.

As more voters get to know him, freshman Republican Senator Ron Johnson is holding relatively steady with a 35% approval rating and 33% disapproval. This is similar to the +4(32/28) ratings Johnson received in March. Johnson’s ratings are fairly polarized with Republicans approving +62(69/7) and Democrats disapproving -55(7/62).

Voters in his home state are no more enamored with new RNC chairman Reince Priebus than Marylanders are with Michael Steele. 11% view Priebus favorably and 21% unfavorably, though most do not venture an opinion. He is seen favorably within his own party though +12(22/10).
